An Exciting Episode of “Untie The Lines”
Hello my friend,
I’m thrilled to share this episode of Nike’s “Untie The Lines” YouTube documentary with you! Do you remember when I visited her in Mexico earlier this year? It feels like ages ago, but those were some unforgettable days of sailing. I already posted the first episode of Season 7 a while back, where Nike was deep into prep work, including her plastic project, In-Motion. Episode 8 picks up right after my arrival in early March.
Preparing for Adventure
I had been eagerly looking forward to this journey ever since Nike and I first discussed it in November 2023. The thought of exploring new places, sailing under the warm sun, and escaping Europe’s cold, rainy weather filled me with excitement. Before leaving, I still had plans to set sail for the Caribbean later this year, and this trip felt like the perfect teaser for what it would be like to sail on a “real” ocean.
We kicked off the adventure with a few days at a cozy surf hotel, which we practically had to ourselves. There, we did some final preparations on KARL before finally splashing him a day before Nike’s birthday. The next few days were a whirlwind of cleaning, sorting, and organizing before we set off—quite abruptly, actually—after the coast guard, police, military, or whoever they were, inspected the boat.
A Memorable Sailing Journey
Sailing outside the Mediterranean was an incredible experience. On our first day, we were greeted by a huge school of dolphins, accompanied by a group of fin whales. Throughout the trip, dolphins joined us almost daily, and every now and then, we’d spot a turtle drifting lazily by.
The opposite side of the bay welcomed us with vast, untouched white beaches dotted with turtle nests, and there wasn’t another boat in sight—just us. I wished we could have stayed longer, but my flight back was already scheduled, and I had to pick up Django, who had been staying with my friend Bo on Elba.
Stay safe and happy, I’ll see you soon.
