connection & community

  • by

Hello, and a warm welcome to all the new subscribers here! I’m currently in a marina on Elba with lots of office work. I plan to leave for Mexico in about one month, where I will meet a friend of mine to go sailing on her boat, and I’d like to take as little work to Mexico as possible.

The last week was perfect weather to ride my bike around the island and I include some Elba impressions in the photos.

why to write at all?

In the last post, I talked about leaving social media, and that decision did not come lightly. I questioned myself a lot:

– Why do I want to communicate after all?
– Why do I need that platform to post about my journey (or is it bragging)?
– And what do I want to achieve with that after all?

I had a talk with my Coach Tristan the other day, and he asked me what my goal is with leaving social media on the one hand and publishing my stories on Patreon on the other hand. I came into the conversation with the question of how I could possibly leave the algorithm-based social media channels completely behind without the fear of missing out on…

You know, that one person that needs a boost of inspiration, that one person that wanted to reconnect with me but couldn’t find me, that one person who needed coaching and is now booking another coach because he happened to be there at the right time.

fear of missing out

He replied by pointing out that the really interesting question is not how I can leave without FOMO but what I really want to create instead. And of course, that is a community. I thrive for connection and meaning, and I have the feeling that I can achieve that on a platform where it is not about engagement and embedding the next advertisement but where it is pure content without any distraction.

Most of the people I like are people I don’t see on a regular basis, and some of them I haven’t even seen in years. From them, I would also like to hear back, and I found out that sharing my own story is often an invitation to pick up the conversation and reconnect. That was a reason why I liked the classic social media as long as the feed was time-based and not algorithm-based, and the feed was filled with real people’s postings and not suggested posts, reposts, and ads.

inspiration and community

I wish that my Patreon community will use the comment section, the internal chat, and the messaging to ask, comment, and share their own stories, and that we’ll have a space to inspire, support, and empower each other.

I personally loved to read stories from people traveling the world all my life. I still do. May it be in blogs, vlogs, or books. I am interested in real-life stories of people traveling past the horizon and facing their fears and the unknown.

In parts, I do the same, and the younger version of me would have enjoyed reading about it and being part of the journey. Stories like mine now were what inspired me in the first place. A person I value a lot often says: it’s not bragging if you have done it. To me, it feels like a thin line between being proud of achievements and bragging. I will stay open, transparent, and honest. I will write about my fears, struggles, and failures as well as about my achievements and successes. I want to be the real person that I am in these posts and invite you on my journey.

I am honored that you share it with me. Thank you for being here, Floh
